How to Make Instant Books and Zines

Description: Learn to make instant artist books and zines from a single sheet of paper! This versatile process doesn’t need any special supplies or equipment. All you need is a sheet of paper, an X-acto knife or scissors and imagination. Once you know how to make them, you can make them anywhere, including at home. These versatile books can be made using computer printouts, photocopies and drawings. They can include collage and cut-outs and other embellishments. Think zines with individual pages, or an overall image spanning the full sheet of paper. They can also be sculptural objects! The instructor will share examples of their own work and that of others to illustrate the many possibilities, including variations, embellishments and other formats. Starting with some prepared templates to make our first books, then using blank paper and various collage and drawing materials (also provided by MGC), you'll make your own original books or zines. Please feel free to bring materials you’d like to experiment with. Note this process works best with lighter weight papers. In addition to class time, non-members receive 3 hours of open studio time; additional hours may be purchased as needed. To arrange your out of class studio time please email mgc@powerhousearts.org. Join as a member for unlimited open studio time, and a 25% discount toward classes. Cancellation Policy STUDENT CLASS CANCELLATION If a student must drop out of a class, 75% of tuition will be refunded as long as MGC is notified 15 days or more prior to the start date of the class. If a student notifies MGC fewer than 15 days prior, no tuition can be refunded. Materials fee are non-refundable. If MGC cancels the class, registrants receive a full refund or studio credit. Instructor Bio: A Brooklyn, native, Robin Sherin, currently lives and creates in New York City. She earned a BS from New York University in studio art with a concentration in printmaking. Recent exhibitions include Liminal Architecture, Lower East Side Printshop in New York City; The Flat File Show, Peep Space, Tarrytown, NY; Hard Edge, Ely Center of Contemporary Art, New Haven, CT and Along the Nerve, Curious Matter, Jersey City, NJ. She was awarded a Guttenberg Arts Residency and a Manhattan Graphics Center Fellowship. Public collections include the New York Public Library; Muscarelle Museum of Art and Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers Archives for Printmaking Studios. She loves baseball and is an avid Yankees fan.
