Description: Learn the basic techniques of the Japanese tradition of woodblock printmaking with water-based inks. This tradition is associated with the extraordinary lessons of design and color passed on from the earliest Ukiyo-e masters. All aspects of the process are introduced: proper care and use of the carving tools, preparing and carving the wood blocks, and hand printing using the baren. Japanese papers, water-based pigments, and color registration are also covered in the class. Open to all levels, though previous printmaking experience is an advantage. Class fee includes materials. In addition to in class time, non-members receive 30 hours of open studio time; additional hours may be purchased as needed. Instructor Bio: Takuji Hamanaka is an artist and printmaker living in Brooklyn, New York. He apprenticed in traditional woodcut printmaking in Tokyo, Japan and has worked in studios both in Japan and the US, collaborating with many artists for editions. His work has been exhibited internationally, including the International Print Center, NY; Whitman College, Washington; National Academy of Fine Arts, India; and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a recipient of the NYFA fellowships, a Pollock-Krasner Grant, The Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant and a Macdowell Colony fellow. He is represented by Kristen Lorello Gallery in NY. https://www.instagram.com/takujihanga/ Cancellation Policy STUDENT CLASS CANCELLATION If a student must drop out of a class, 75% of tuition will be refunded as long as MGC is notified 15 days or more prior to the start date of the class. If a student notifies MGC fewer than 15 days prior, no tuition can be refunded. Materials fee are non-refundable. If MGC cancels the class we issue a full refund or studio credit.
